Compound Photonics Group Brings Breakthrough to Digital Display Market

Optically Addressed Spatial Light Modulator performance demonstrated to deliver the industry's first true high definition digital displays with superior image quality with exceptional affordability

Cambridge, UK and Phoenix Arizona USA, November 17th 2009 - Compound Photonics Group Limited ("CPG" or "Compound Photonics"), a private venture-backed developer of innovative multimedia display technologies, today announced its Optically Addressed Spatial Light Modulator (OASLM) display platform that is poised to revolutionize the multi-billion dollar digital display industry. The breakthrough performance demonstrated by the OASLM platform has dramatic implications for manufacturers of electronic devices that require larger, brighter displays with better image quality and reduced power consumption. The OASLM platform technology produces the best digital display experience at a fraction of the cost of existing manufacturing processes. CPG is also set to launch a pico product in the next twelve months.

"As consumers demand more performance from multimedia devices, in turn manufacturers are required to deliver premium image quality from digital displays which comes at the expense of higher manufacturing costs," said Jonathan Sachs, CEO of Compound Photonics. "Our platform technology completely changes the game by fully integrating the new advances we have made in our novel nano-materials design to deliver a single modular system which can then utilize existing electronic and manufacturing processes for high volume production."

At the heart of the OASLM platform is the Compound Photonics OASLM™ technology - now protected by over 70 patents - to delivery a breakthrough innovation utilizing existing display infrastructure that allows for the integration of nano technology and liquid crystals to deliver critical differentiation while leveraging existing manufacturing equipment processes and materials.

Performance Demonstrated at Compound Photonics Arizona R&D Centre

Compound Photonics Group's display platform is built using CPG's OASLM which has been demonstrated at its R&D facility in Phoenix in September 2009. The results providing substantial validation in five key areas:

  1. 1. Dramatically Reduced Manufacturing Costs: OASLM manufacturing and production costs are an order of magnitude less than devices using current technologies. Due to production constraints being removed by this technology platform, in the future higher performance (size, resolution, and illumination) digital displays can now be produced far more economically.
  2. 2. Significantly Improved Brightness: The OASLM platform produces 200% to 350% improvement in brightness over devices using current technologies.
  3. 3. Significantly Improved Image Resolution: The OASLM platform produces improvement in resolution over devices using current technologies in order to deliver resolutions in excess of 9 million pixels.
  4. 4. Modular Illumination Architecture: The OASLM platform is not constrained by the type of light source (unlike existing technologies) meaning that either 'arc lamps' or Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) can be used for illumination.
  5. 5. Enhanced Energy Efficiency: The OASLM platform has enough optical efficiency to use LEDs as the light source which have lower power consumption and an average life of 100,000 hours life, while existing ARC lamp technologies are less energy efficient and only have an average life of 1000's of hours. This improvement in energy efficiency will reduce the overall cost of device ownership for environmentally conscious consumers.

"This is a thrilling time for Compound Photonics Group as the company moves from proving the technology to entering into licensing deals and achieving commercial sales", said Boyd Mulvey, CEO of CREATE Partners Limited, the Founder investor in CPG. "No other display technology currently available can create such an impact - it simply transforms display product performance, cost and quality far beyond the constraints that have limited existing display technology architectures. The reaction from industry partners to the OASLM platform so far has been extremely encouraging."

Volume orders for displays will be satisfied from a recently acquired fab in Phoenix, Arizona in the United States, using a process developed and proved at the company's research and development centre. The facility is supported by existing commercial production of LCoS devices for LCD displays.

Derek Goodwin, head of UKTI's Global Entrepreneur Programme said: "Having patiently incubated its technology in the UK, it's great to now see Compound Photonics Group demonstrating its commercial potential on a global scale. The company's decision to commence its R&D in the UK has given it a head-start to developing a truly international commercialization strategy, with a particular focus on forming partnerships with major electronics device companies in the United States, Asia and Europe."

ABOUT COMPOUND PHOTONICS GROUP LIMITED

Headquartered in Cambridge, England, and led by experts in the fields of displays, optics and MEMS, Compound Photonic's mission is to develop and market innovative multimedia display technologies that combine the world's highest optical performance with the lowest production cost. Compound Photonics Limited engages in the design and development of a spatial light modulators based on gallium arsenide thin films using a novel technological approach that provides step function increases in performance and reduction in cost. Light modulators based on the OASLM platform can control the intensity of visible light for use in the digital cinema, large venue, and front and rear projection television consumer electronics markets. Displays using the OASLM platform can scale from desktop displays through HD televisions and up to large screen cinema displays. For more information, visitwww.compoundphotonics.com

ABOUT THE OASLM DIGITAL DISPLAY PLATFORM TECHNOLOGY

The OASLM is a new display technology protected by over 70 patents that are all owned by the Compound Photonics Group.

The OASLM promises very high levels of resolution to improve the overall color definition in video projection. The platform will have the highest resolution in the market at 9 million pixels and up to 35 million pixel resolution for professional video projection in cinemas.

The OASLM has enough optical efficiency to use Light Emitting Diodes as the light source in mainstream business projectors. LED lamps have an average life of 100,000 hours while ARC lamps have an average life of 1000s of hours. This will reduce the overall cost of ownership.

The OASLM enables instant-on, LED illumination and will be at least five times brighter than current video projector technologies using LEDs today.

The OASLM will be a tenth cheaper than existing video projection technologies

The OASLM allows for significantly improved energy efficiency in consumer electronic devices containing digital displays.

ABOUT THE GLOBAL ENTREPRNEURSHIP PROGRAMME

"The Global Entrepreneur Programme (GEP) is a UK Government initiative designed to strengthen the UK's knowledge-based economy by helping early stage technology companies from around the world goes global from a UK hub. In the five years that the Programme has been in business, it has helped more than 60 early-stage technology businesses from across the globe establish in the UK and helped raise over £110m worth of investment."
